What are the types of arc welding?

Arc welding is a process that allows metal parts to be joined together in a long-lasting way. Arc welding machines are thus designated for generating an electric arc between the work-piece and the tip of an electrode, which produces an intense and localized heat.

 The high temperature of the arc makes it possible, in particular, to melt the ends of the parts to be welded and the filler metal, which may be in the form of an electrode or wire. Certain welding works do not require the use of filler metal.

 

Depending on the process they use, there are three main types of arc welding machines:

- MMA welding machines
- MIG /MAG welding machines
- TIG welding machine


What is an MMA welding machine?


The MMA welding machine, also known as a coated electrode manual welding machine, is a power source that produces a high output current. 


The welding machine's output consists of a ground cable, which will be connected to the part to be welded, and a cable with an electrode holder.


What is a MIG / MAG welding machine?


The MIG / MAG welding machine is also an arc welding machine, but instead of the coated electrode, there is a roll of wire that unfolds in the welding torch as the wire is consumed. 


The function of the electrode coating is ensured, in this type of equipment, by a gas released through the torch at the level of the welding area, in order to protect the weld bead from oxidation that would be caused by exposure to atmospheric air.

 
What is a TIG welding machine?


TIG welding machines use an inert gas, a non-consumable electrode and a filler metal. In certain cases, welding can be done without filler metal. 


The TIG welding machine allows welding of thinner materials.
